Since 1993, Dr. Whelchel has worked with the Jacksonville - Murmansk Medical Project of the Jacksonville Sister City Association. This has involved seminars and instruction of Russian surgeons both in Murmansk, Russia and here in Jacksonville, in laparoscopic surgery and also in the management of breast cancer.

Dr. Whelchel has had specialized training in advanced laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgical procedures and routinely performs these procedures.

These laparoscopic or minimally invasive procedures include:

  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band for weight loss
  • Laparoscopic Hernia repair (groin & abdominal)
  • Laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia repair for esophageal reflux disease
  • Laparoscopic resection of the colon & small bowel
  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy
  • Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gallbladder)
  • Laparoscopic Splenectomy
  • Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy
  • Hemorrhoidectomy ( PPH -Circular Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy)
